Teacher of Chemistry

Full-time · Senior School Voorschoten

We are currently seeking a Teacher of Chemistry to work at our Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) campus for an initial period of 1 year, starting 24 August 2026.

Do you have knowledge of the English National Curriculum and experience or interest in teaching GCSE, International A Level or IB?

The role will initially be based at Senior School Voorschoten(SSV) and may require the candidate to work in another campus in the future.

The School:

The British School in the Netherlands is arranged into four separate campuses. The Senior School Voorschoten is a large, modern and very well equipped campus in Voorschoten, which serves international students as well as local students from the surrounding area.

Our senior school is situated in the town of Voorschoten, between the Hague and Leiden with excellent public transport, motorway and bicycle connections from the surrounding areas (10 minutes by train to the centre of the Hague). This is an exciting time to join one of the oldest British International schools in Europe as we continue to cement our reputation both locally and globally. We largely follow the British National Curriculum at KS3 and KS4 and offer multiple post-16 academic pathways (including IB, A-Level and BTEC), serving nearly 900 students of over 80 different nationalities. Our student body is motivated to succeed, our families are hugely supportive and our colleagues are welcoming, innovative and of the highest calibre. Our students’ destinations vary greatly, including Oxford, Cambridge and LSE as well as the leading Universities in the Netherlands and globally.

The Successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • a fully qualified Physics teacher who is also an excellent practitioner in the classroom, with a solid understanding of the British education system (international experience is desirable)

  • a dedication to the co-curricular life of the school

  • someone who is able to impart passion for their subject in the classroom and beyond

  • a person with a commitment to supporting and promoting safeguarding, student welfare, equality and diversity.

The Role:

The Chemistry department at the British School in the Netherlands (SSV) is staffed by 4 Chemistry teachers, alongside a dedicated technician. As well as working within the Chemistry department, you would be part of a large Science faculty made up of 16 highly talented members of staff, with plenty of opportunities to learn and grow by working together. The atmosphere in the department is collegiate, supportive and humorous and the team works well together to achieve goals. You can expect to work with students who are eager to learn and at the BSN, you can truly teach.

The department is exceptionally well resourced, both through digital resources and experimental equipment and we are always willing to invest in new ideas to add to the repertoire of what we do.

In Chemistry, we believe in helping the students to learn 21st Century skills, ensuring the students learn how to think for themselves and become independent thinkers and doers. As a result, the Chemistry department at the BSN has an excellent record of student achievement, with many students achieving the maximum possible grades in the courses they take. Our students ask questions about the subject that are truly insightful. Being able to support the students with their questions in a way that helps them to connect together the bigger picture in Chemistry is a key aim for the department.

In the BSN, the students take either Separate Sciences or Trilogy (AQA) during Key Stage 4 and can then choose between the International Baccalaureate and International A Level (Edexcel) programmes during Key Stage 5. Having experience in both programmes would be an advantage for any applicant. Chemistry is a popular subject and is one of the most chosen subjects for IB and A Level in the school.
