Language Assistant - German

We have an exciting opportunity for a German speaker, with the experience and motivation to work with young adults, to join our Senior School Voorschoten campus as a Language Assistant for German. Working closely with the Teachers of German, you’ll build up our students’ knowledge of the language and help prepare them for examinations. This position is part-time (20% FTE), Mondays and Fridays and is available immediately.

The aim of the British School is to provide a secure, happy learning environment in which children receive quality teaching and learning. The Senior Schools offer students the opportunity to study French, German and Spanish in Year 7, opting for two of these in Years 8 and 9, alongside compulsory Dutch lessons. Students may continue to study any combination of these to examination level at age 18. Within the Senior Schools, the students benefit from a system of native Language Assistants who supplement and support the work of the Teacher during lessons. Native speaker students also have the opportunity to consolidate their native language in a separate programme in Year 7, extra-curricular language classes in Years 8 and 9 and the option to choose their native language in an Enrichment Program in Years 10 and 11. These programmes are run by our native Language Assistants.

As a language assistant, your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Help staff in developing contemporary lesson materials in German.
  • Assist in whole class teaching in the lower years, by helping the Teacher assess student's oral work whilst they are working in pairs or in small groups.
  • Give some instruction in oral work to small groups of students.
  • Assist students in the preparing of their GCSE oral exams.
  • Help AS/A level and IB students produce authentic style written work.
  • Develop and deliver the Year 7 Native Speaker Withdrawal Program.
  • Develop and deliver the Year 8 and 9 Native Speaker Extra-curricular Language classes.
  • Deliver the Year 10 and 11 Native Speaker Enrichment Program.
  • Enhance the cultural awareness of Germany among students and staff.
